BIOGRAPHY

Born in Milan, Giampaolo Maria Bisanti studied conducting, clarinet, piano and composition at the Conservatory ‘G.Verdi’ in his home town; he has won several awards in international conducting competitions including the ‘Dimitris Mitropolous’ competition in Athens (chairman Sir Neville Marriner).  

As  of 2015, he has had a number of highly successful and important international debuts such as the new production of ‘La Bohème’ at the Oper Zurich and ‘Macbeth’ at the Teatro Liceo Barcelona, which rapidly launched him into the spot light and much esteem. Since then, he had successful debuts with different new productions and repertories at the Staatsoper Vienna, Semperoper Dresden, Deutsche Oper Berlin, Bayerische Staatsoper Munich,  Teatro La Fenice in Venice, Maggio Musicale Fiorentino in Florence, Festival in Peralada, Festival Les Chorégies in Orange, Teatro Sao Carlos Lisbon, New National Theatre Tokyo and  Concertgebouw in Amsterdam, among others.  

During the past few seasons, other great international debuts have taken place which include the Staatsoper Hamburg with a new production of ‘Lucia di Lammermoor’, the Opéra de Paris (L’Elisir d’amore), the Opéra de Montecarlo (Madame Butterfly),  the Opéra in Toulouse  (Norma),  in the United States at the Seattle Opera (La Traviata) and at La Scala Milan where he lead ‘Adriana Lecouvreur’ and ‘Un Ballo in maschera’ in 2022, followed by Macbeth in 2023 and ‘Cavalleria Rusticana/Pagliacci’ in 2024.

In the first part of 2024, besides at La Scala, he lead RUSALKA (debut) and FALSTAFF at the Opéra Royal Wallonie, highly successful series of OTELLO and NABUCCO at the Staatsoper Vienna, NABUCCO at the Deutsche Oper Berlin, before leading a new production of Berlioz’ BENVENUTO CELLINI (debut) at the Semperoper Dresden.

In season 2024/25,  in Liège he is busy first with LA TRAVIATA and then with a row of important debuts:  his second Wagner title, TRISTAN UND ISOLDE, followed by WERTHER, as well as LA DAMATION DE FAUST in concert (debut); he furthermore leads a new production of IL CAPPELLO DI PAGLIA DI FIRENZE at the Teatro Carlo Felice in Genoa, returns to the Staatsoper Vienna for MADAME BUTTERFLY, to the Staatsoper Hamburg for TOSCA,  and by the end of the season to the Théatre du Capitole in Toulouse for ADRIANA LECOUVREUR.

Between 2017 and 2022 he was Chief Condcutor of the Teatro Petruzzelli in Bari, Italy, where he also conducted with great success his first Wagner title, ‘THE FLYING DUTCHMAN’. As of 2022/23, he holds the position of Music Director at the Royal Opéra de Wallonie in Liège/Belgium.
