BIOGRAPHY

Music Director (appointed in 2023) of the Teatro de La Zarzuela in Madrid and Principal Guest Conductor of the ‘Amigos de la Opera de La Coruña’,  Spanish Conductor José Miguel Perez-Sierra reached first international attention taking the podium of the Pesaro Rossini Opera Festival conducting ‘Il Viaggio a Reims’ in 2006.  Since then, he has been guest in many theatres and auditoriums in Spain, Italy, France, Germany, Poland, Portugal, Uruguay, Chile and Canada, among others, conducting both a wide opera and symphonic repertory.

He studied with Gabriele Ferro for four years and was assistant at the San Carlo Theatre in Naples, at the Teatro Massimo in Palermo and the Teatro Real in Madrid. He also studied with Gianluigi Gelmetti (Accademia Chigiana, Siena) and Colin Metters (Royal Academy, London) to later become Alberto Zedda’s assistant from 2004 to 2009. In 2029 and 2010, he was Mo.Zedda’s assistant conductor at the Placido Domingo Centre de Perfeccionament at the Palau des les Arts in Valencia. From 2009 to 2012 he had a close and fruitful relationship to Lorin Maazel which was fundamental to Perez-Sierra’s training, attending his rehearsals both in Valencia and Munich.

His debut in Spain took place in 2005 with the Orquesta Sinfonica de Galicia and since then he has been a regular guest conductor of almost all opera houses and orchestras in Spain, from Madrid to Barcelona, from Bilbao to Tenerife.  

Outside of Spain, he has been guest of the Théatre des Champs-Elysées in Paris, Opéra de Marseille, Massy, Metz, Opéra de Montréal, Théâtre Royal de la Monnaie Bruxelles, Teatro Municipal Santiago del Chile, Festival Puccini Torre del Lago, Teatro San Carlo in Naples, Teatro Verdi Trieste, Royal Opera Festival in Krakow, Rossini Opera Festival Wildbad, among others.

Some operatic highlights of season 2022/23 and 2023/24 (besides numerous concerts in Spain and abroad) include LES HUGUENOTS at the Opéra Marseille, NORMA and AIDA in La Coruña, AIDA in Las Palmas, Il SIGNOR BRUSCHINO at the Krakow Opera Festival and Rossini Festival Wildbad,  IL TABARRO & GIANNI SCHICCHI at Opera Oviedo, DIALOGUES DES CARMELITES a Massy, SAMSON ET DALILA in Tenerife, LA VIDA BREVE in Metz, LUISA FERNANDA and L’ITALIANA IN ALGERI in Krakow, CARMEN in San Sebastian, MADAME BUTTERFLY at Teatro Coccia Novara.  

His 2024/2025 season include LA BOHEME in La Coruña, MARINA and LA TABERNERA DEL PUERTO  at the Teatro Zarzuela Madrid, LA VERBENA DE LA PALOMA at Palau des les Arts Valencia, a new production of MARIA STUARDA at the Teatro Real Madrid, TURANDOT at the Theatre Basel (production Christoph Loy).

He has furthermore recently established a cooperation with internationally renowned stage director Christoph Loy for various common projects …to be presented soon.
