Italian tenor Leonardo Caimi has established an international career in the Italian and French repertoire, appearing at many of the world’s leading opera houses, including the Royal Opera House Covent Garden, Teatro alla Scala, Teatro Real Madrid, Bayerische Staatsoper, Teatro Colón in Buenos Aires, Deutsche Oper Berlin, La Monnaie, Staatsoper Hamburg, Opernhaus Zürich and the Salzburg Festival.

His repertoire encompasses some of the principal tenor roles of Puccini, Bizet, Verdi and the French repertoire, including Hoffmann in Les contes d’Hoffmann, Don José in Carmen, Pinkerton in Madama Butterfly, Rodolfo in La bohème, Calaf in Turandot, Turiddu in Cavalleria rusticana, Des Grieux in Manon, Henri in Les vêpres siciliennes and Maurizio in Adriana Lecouvreur. More recently, he has expanded his repertoire with Erik in Der fliegende Holländer and Canio in Pagliacci.

2026/27 SEASON

Leonardo Caimi opens his 2026/27 season with a return to the Teatro Colón in Buenos Aires in the title role of Offenbach’s Les contes d’Hoffmann, conducted by Carlo Montanaro.

Later in October, he returns to Teatru Astra in Gozo as Pinkerton in a new production of Puccini’s Madama Butterfly. During the season he also returns to Oper Leipzig and the National Theatre Prague as Don José in Carmen.

A major highlight of the season is his role debut as Canio in Leoncavallo’s Pagliacci at the Opéra Nice Côte d’Azur, in a new production directed by Jean-Philippe Clarac and Olivier Deloeuil and conducted by Yves Abel.

RECENT HIGHLIGHTS

Recent highlights include two major appearances at the Royal Opera House Covent Garden, as Rodolfo in La bohème and in the title role of Les contes d’Hoffmann. He has also appeared as Hoffmann at the Staatsoper Hamburg, Don José at the Teatro Colón in Buenos Aires and National Theatre Prague, Turiddu in Cavalleria rusticana at the Teatro Carlo Felice in Genoa, and Luigi in Il tabarro and Erik in Der fliegende Holländer with Welsh National Opera.

Among the defining roles of his career is Don José in Carmen, which he has performed at houses including Deutsche Oper Berlin, Oper Leipzig and Teatro Colón. His Puccini repertoire includes Rodolfo, Pinkerton and Calaf, with appearances at the Royal Opera House, Deutsche Oper Berlin, La Monnaie and the Puccini Festival in Torre del Lago.

Further career highlights include Maurizio in Adriana Lecouvreur at the Teatro Colón, Henri in Les vêpres siciliennes at the Bayerische Staatsoper and Oper Frankfurt, Riccardo in Un ballo in maschera in Rio de Janeiro and Des Grieux in Manon in Tel Aviv.

Caimi has collaborated with conductors including Riccardo Muti, Lorin Maazel, Kent Nagano and Carlo Rizzi, and with directors including David McVicar, Calixto Bieito, Emma Dante and Damiano Michieletto.

Born in Italy, he holds diplomas in classical singing and clarinet as well as a degree in Philosophy from the University of Messina.
